For a road car, which would you prefer. Semi-trailing arms or a live axle? Which is the better setup?

Semi trailing, fun lift off oversteer.

I looked down on it at first, but the live axle setup on my SD1 was one of the most unexpectedly-awesome aspects of it. Sure, it was a bit skittish on rough surfaces, but the rest of the time, it was great fun. Its limits were predictable and well-defined, and even if I did overcook it, it was never vicious, and was always easy to bring back into line.
The Triumph's semi-trailing arm setup was pretty good, but not quite so entertaining, and tended to be a bit less forgiving if provoked (which, admittedly, wasn't easy to do).

Hmmm, interesting. Basically, I might be picking up a Triumph Dolomite (2.0l TR7 engine, auto 'box but I'd swap in a 5-speed, actually functional for once!). That's got a live axle, but I've had this idea for a while of using the longer doors from a 2-door Toledo and the STA rear from a mk1 Triumph 2000 (only a couple of mm difference in track to a Dolly Sprint) and making a 2-door IRS Dolomite Sprint :)

I daily drove a live axle 5.0 Cobra for almost 12 years. I loved it, it might not be the best of rough surfaces but I knew its limits and had no surprises.
